Ashgate #1 - Game Thread

"Wait there's humans here too?" I ask, sidling up to the open door and peaking through slowly.

 

As you walk over to the open door on the right (Room 106) - you notice that not only are all the other doors locked, but some seem to have numbers written on them, scrawled in blood. You make a mental note of this, and ask Umbra about the humans.

"Well yeah. This whole place is ran by humans. They're the reason we are all in here. Well... I guess that was true until recently. After The Incident I don't suppose there are a lot of them around any more?"

You peak through the open door, and a fragrant smell washes over you. You find yourself lost in this smell - and before you can stop yourself, you step into the room to get another whiff. A overwhelming hunger takes you over, and you find yourself salivating. From behind you, Umbra wraps her arms around your neck, also apparently in the same state.

"T-that smells... sooooooooo goood." she purrs into your ear. You nod in agreement.

What will you do next?

Hold my breath and walk backwards until I can't smell the alluring fragnant anymore

 

Try as you might, you find it hard to resist. Instead of taking steps backward, you seem to be getting closer and closer instead. It probably doesn't help that Umbra seems to be pushing you forward too. You shine your flashlight around the room, looking for its source. On the left is a wardrobe, and on the back wall is a desk next to a door that leads out onto a small balcony. On your right there is a bed. You take another deep breath in, and then shine your light out onto the balcony. You immediately dive in and examine the goods.

Which will you give to Umbra? The intestines or some lung?

Lifting up the intestines, I drop them from my hand accidentally.

 

Impatient, Umbra leans over and scoops up the intestines - dragging them across your bare shoulder. You hear the sound of springs, and you can only assume she has gone to eat her meal on top of the neatly made bed. You tear off the intestine draped across you, letting the length that Umbra has her grasp on fall off of your shoulder. You take a bite of the part in your hands. Yuuuuummy.

"Mmmm, what even IS this?!" Umbra exclaims from behind you. You have a pretty good idea, but it wasn't something you wanted to voice out loud. You chose not to answer her, and continued eating instead. You sit down in the doorway and look over to the desk beside you. On it, there is a book that has a few pages missing.

What will you do next?

Scan the room to find something like cloth, to remove the blood from my hands-
Then pick up the book

 

You can't risk looking around the room while Umbra is feasting. Taking another bite of intestine, you grab the book from the desk. It seems to look like a diary.

Paul Langford Diary Entry #1

I don't know why I'm doing this, to be honest. I think it's because things have gotten so weird lately that all I can do is put it on paper.

So, I got a new job recently. It was such a lucky break. I've been on unemployment for the past 8 months, and things were starting to look really bad for me. I was at a job fair talking to some people when our oh-so-perfect Ashgate Industries started working the floor. I hate these bastards. Anyway, I was about to leave before someone grabbed me by the shoulder and stuffed a phanplet under my nose. I laughed at the guy - I don't have the kind of experience needed to work with such an esteemed group - I told him. I ended up getting talked into it and filling out the application form. I figured it couldn't hurt.

Man, I was so ******* wrong.

The job required me to move into their housing units. I figured it would be fine - my Maw passed away last autumn, and I don't have much in the way of friends. I wouldn't be missing much, and the pay was too good to complain about having to pack up and move. I was instructed to be ready for my flight at the nearby airport, and that's where things started getting weird. I met up with the other who had managed to get hired, and an Ashgate representative ushered us in a deserted section of the airport. We were debriefed about a lot of dodgy sounding shit - all calls to the outside are monitored, you can only take your vacation in pre-approved locations... some guy just up and left at one point. After they were done, they actually blindfolded us and loaded us onto the plane. When they eventually removed the blindfolds to let us eat, all you could see was ocean. We ate and... then we fell asleep.

Yup, they spiked the food.

A few of the group starting voicing their concerns after we all woke up, but all we were met with "It's for your own safety." - "We cannot reveal the location of your employment" and some other shit that didn't settle right. We were blindfolded again, and it wasn't long until we landed, hauled off the plane, and on some kind of train or subway.

At the end of that ride, we were finally there. Our belongings were taken away from us - to be searched and screened, despite protests - and we were given the orientation and job assignments. The jobs they were giving out to us weren't all that fancy. I ended up with being a Janitor. Just my luck. Some other guys got kitchen duty. We were given uniforms and ID, and led to the dorms on one of the lower floors. It's only been maybe... an hour or so since they gave us our room assignments, and my stuff was already inside my room when I got here.

I get Ashgate is a big deal and all, but what the hell just happened today?

You chew slowly as you read. Seems like the room belonged to a man who was a Janitor in Ashgate. You wonder for a moment if it isn't his entrails you're eating. As you finish up the handful you currently have, Umbra sneaks up behind you - her arms around your chest. You feel another twang from below. You pat one of her arms gently - smearing blood over it. Umbra took the hint and withdrew slowly as you got back onto your feet.

It's strange... but now that you seem to have regained you senses, you realise that the music seems to be louder on the balcony.

Search the corpse for anything useful

 

You throw the diary behind you, and it lands on the bed with a small thud. Umbra withdrew, probably to go look at the diary herself. "Ehhh...? What's this say? I can't read...." she whines, as you look at the corpse in front of you. Given how fresh it was, it can't have been more then an hour since he was killed. You shrug, and search his body for anything useful he might have.

"Say, this might act as good bait..." I lift up the corpse and toss it over the balcony.

 

Hey - why not? You shrug and smile cheekily as you voice your intentions and throw the body over the balcony. Poor Paul. The body made a thud on the artificial grass below, the sound a dull thud against the rooms enclosed space. From the looks of it - this entire block was inside it's own solitary cube. You could make out the same dimmed lights - like the ones from your room - on the walls around the garden and the roof above you. You hear the skittering increase in volume, and watch as the garden space beneath you grow increasingly darker. You scoff and shout "Sorry for interrupting your meal!" The Creeping Darkness gurgled in response. I suppose he didn't mind THAT much, eh?

As you lean out over the rail of the balcony, you feel a cool breeze from the air-con in the main block. You stood and enjoyed the music, and wondered if the source was reachable from somewhere in the garden.

Exit Room 106 and proceed further down the hall.

 

I asked Umbra to come over to you, and secured her arms around your neck once more. Now that you were free to avoid accidental death, you exited the room and walked out to where the light was coming out before. It seemed like some kind of lounging space, with a huge balcony around the outside. To your left again, was another series of rooms.

Well, considering that we have a source of light, I guess we can turn this flashlight off for now. Can we open any of the doors to these new rooms?
