You tried Red Dead Redemption 2 on your rig?

Yeah. Wanted to ask because the game is notoriously badly optimized. It's no better looking and no more technically advanced than Witcher 3, yet a rig that can max out Witcher 3 comfortably can manage RDR2 only on medium. You look at benchmarks and you notice that CPU & GPU usage in that game is usually between 40 and 60% i.e. using half of the available CPU and GPU power on average.

Yeah.

A laptop with i5-9300H or Ryzen 5 3550H and GTX 1650M or RX5300M should, on paper, manage the game on high settings at 1080p. But they only manage medium. Reason? CPU and GPU usage 45% only.

It doesn't seemingly use all cores and thus overall 45% on a quad core and 30% on a hexacore. With Crysis Remastered as well, it seemingly uses only two and sometimes only one core at 99%

 

Yeah. And with those consoles using AMD APUs with SMT, we should hopefully, in the near future, see game engines actually taking advantage of hyperthreading. This would be a boon to those using CPUs with not-so-high core counts but extra logical cores.

Though, truth be told, I'd be happy if they optimize PC titles to just use all the ******* physical cores.

It's 2021. That we still have games releasing which don't use all the physical cores is a travesty. This shit was supposed to have been solved back in 2012-13 with the Xbox One and PS4 generation dawning.

 

Not too outdated for 2012-13 standards. They were still comparable to a pricey upper middle class rig using 2012 hardware. But, yeah, they could both have been better. And it didn't help that both MS and Sony wanked the capabilities for their consoles.
