An i3 desktop right now would be pretty affordable. It'd cost two-thirds as much as a new laptop with an i5 or Ryzen 5 (may be even less). But laptop is a must for mobility reasons. We already have a desktop in office.

 

Wife's current laptop is my old laptop from 2013. It's at end of life.

She needs a laptop only. So do I. The Aspire 7 is used for both work and gaming. So... Yeah. So will the new gaming laptop, if I go that route.

 

Right now I'm considering only a proper work laptop. Acer Aspire 5 with Ryzen 5 5500U seems the best bet; it's overall a perfect budget work/student laptop and can easily handle Age of Empires (including IV) on the Vega 7 iGPU alone, and there is also a blue-gray Aspire 5 model equipped with RTX 2050M (which is roughly comparable in performance to the GTX 1650M but with added RTX and DLSS support) . But the only literal drawback is the power adapter pin being shit quality, and that isn't even a drawback for the laptop itself, which is actually of good overall quality (actually slightly better build quality than comparably priced offerings from HP, Dell, Lenovo, even Asus).

Yeah.

Considered a couple of seemingly very good models from other brands. Turns out they have displays with PWM, which is a huge nope.

There is also one really good Lenovo model I considered - with a powerful CPU, decent display with no PWM, excellent keyboard, great battery life, and ample storage upgrade options. But it has weak display hinges and apparently gets crazy hot. There is also the issue of bloatware and in-built spyware shit.

And also Nazi-leaning incels, judging by the Jordan Peterson shorts in recommendations.

 

Yeah. Just when it feels like I've narrowed down the seemingly perfect model that ticks all the right boxes for the wife, there is some ******* disadvantage.
