I need to apply that wisdom tomorrow for this one client who is undergoing a hectic tax audit. He got himself into this ******* mess. He can get himself out. I am done with him.

It's complicated. Simply put: He's done a lot of stupid shit at the company and expects me to qualify those in the audit report. But I don't want to risk being fined myself and potentially disbarred from practice.

Everything was fine under his father. But he took semi-retirement when he hit 70. This guy though... He's not dumb, he's actually far more qualified than his father from an educational standpoint. But he has neither the experience nor the will nor the ethics nor the charm.

 

But, like, aren't you supposed to just quit (and sometimes even report) as soon as someone admits that? Unless it's a heck lot of entry errors, which I doubt is the case here, or maybe if the person is really close to you or something, withdrawing is a no-brainer. I'm saying that it's the standard thing to do.

Anyway... I've demanded a hefty fee. And also told him that whatever shit comes his way, he has to deal with (which he agreed to).

His parents and my parents were close friends for 40 years. Heck, they love me as well. But this guy is . . . something else.

If it was actually 100% illegal, something you couldn't get away with with just a fine, I wouldn't be doing this audit.
