Were they some dumbass torn jeans? Then may be I could see some of their reasoning. It'd still be a tad too far, but as someone who despises torn jeans, I'd be more understanding.

They were dark proper jeans that were more than acceptable, and he had on a formal shirt plus blazer and semi-formal shoes.
