Okay... So...

A client of mine who works in cyber-security explained this to me. The issue has something to do with mobile networks handling TLS/SSL differently from regular broadband.

Simply put: The regular broadband was unable to "establish a secure connection" to the portal. The 4G/5G mobile network could.

It was not just an issue with my broadband connections (BSNL and Airtel both). People with Act, Jio, Hathaway, Excitel, Tata Fiber all faced the same issue.

A chartered accountant colleague of mine also said he resorted to using his VI mobile hotspot instead of his Act FTTH last night. Same story in many other offices.

One more Income Tax portal issue:
It is not at all accessible from Chrome/Chromium/Blink based browsers since last night. Only Firefox and Safari. However, it can be accessed on Chrome/Chromium based browsers on mobile hostpot, for all tasks except for tax payments, which fail. Tax payments are working only on Firefox and Safari, regardless of network. They will absolutely not work on a Chromium-based browser.
