yeah it was a fractal node case i3 9100 maybe then a server motherboard 32gb ecc ddr4 ram 8x 16tb exos drives, 2x 256 maybe ssds for boot mirrored etc

 

You could expose it to the internet and register a domain and tie it to it, or you could use a vpn and host a vpn on the nas

 

Why exactly are you getting one? What a re you using it to? I don't know much about the premade ones but it's just like pc hardware, it'll have a pre-loaded OS on it, then some amount of drive bays for you to populate with drives. It may or may not offer redundancy with the drives in a raid array if it supports it. I wouldn't treat it as the only backup, still backup important files elsewhere. Generally media files probably aren't really important.

 

Ah ok. How much stuff do you have? Cloud storage (free) may be more beneficial/convenient depending on what it is and how large. Yes, I use RaidZ2 which means 2 drives can fail and my data will still be in tact. It means that 2 of the 8 drives are for redundancy so my capacity is only 16tbx6 isntead of 16tbx8.

 

Feel like you could just get a 2tb external ssd, but do whatever you think is best. Just keep in mind that remote accessing will be limited by the upload speed of the network it's on when you access it remotely. So if you're trying to copy over 100gb files remotely and the upload speed is like 20mb/s, it's going to be probably less than 20mb/s "downloading" the files.

 

Yeah, but for personal photos you'd prob also want another backup, right? in case anything fucks up.
