    I had an interest in vertebrate palaeontology and astrophysics. But I haven't been keeping up with any news in those fields for a year now (may be more). I just recently got back into gaming, and my wife is pushing me to get back into reading and doing maths.

    She wants me to get back to my previous hobbies and improve my mental health xD :pepe:

    It would be hilarious if this was the case.

    I once considered making a career out of my interests. But the overall environment for pure research is so ******* dead here that I lost all heart.

    And the attitudes of people here don't help. You say you want to go into pure research, and people look at you like you just said you want to be a prostitute or something.

    I not only lost all heart. I also lost all hope of this shithole country ever becoming a scientific or technological super-power that our chest-thumping nationalists claim it will become by the end of the decade.

    What a ******* joke.

    I honestly feel like I should have nutted up, worked at it, and gotten out while I had the chance. But now...


    Sorry.

    I just wanted to get that off my chest.

    From what limited stuff I know about you, I don't think it's as simple as doing other hobbies, although it may help. I feel like you're worried about stuff in general like your parents health, you might even be overworking yourself, worried about if you'll ever get your own house, etc. You gotta want to do your hobbies, otherwise if you don't even enjoy or feel what you're doing, it just become a literal unpaid "job" basically.

    Yeah, I kind of wanted to do like idk computer repair/building whatever but as my own business I guess. But there's always issues with that, maybe it's just me going the safer route, but I don't want to spend heaps of money just for it to not work out and go tits up. Then there's working full time and you don't really wanna start something else on the side in addition to whatever you're currently doing. Basically just a mind set to fail. xD

    Hope the therapist goes well!

    I had guilt about my hobbies wasting time and money.

    The wife and sister both tore into me and told me what the **** is the point of earning money if I don't enjoy it on things I love.

    Basically...
    The whole reason I'm going to therapy is to deal with this weird guilt and weird feeling that I don't deserve anything or deserve to enjoy myself.

    The whole reason I let go of some of my hobbies is because of lack of time and that guilt.

    Sounds like some form of depression or something? Well hope it goes well! I have the same view as them, what's the point of earning money if you aren't getting some joy from it too?
