I absolutely adore Shirou. He is by far the most complex character Fate has to offer. Of course, I can't say that for sure since I haven't read Fate/Extra yet and people told me that Hakuno (Extra's protagonist)can very much stand up to Shirou in terms of complexity, development and how fleshed out he is.

Anyways, the reason I love Shirou is because he's an unique, complex and likeable character. His whole character is an unique view on the topic of heroism. He makes something as great as heroes seem distorted. And Zex, while you disagree, Shirou is in fact a very likeable person. He's snarky attitude was very much enjoyable while reading through the VN.

I don't like judging Shirou in a ''HF Shirou > UBW Shirou > Fate Shirou'' way. They're all the same character, just another view on him. FSN is Shirou's psychological story. The story of his world-view, beliefs and ideals. Much like Tsukihime is Tohno Shiki's story and Kara no Kyoukai is Ryougi Shiki's story.

While he seems like a kind completely human person, Shirou is in fact not one. He is a very violent sociopath. He seems human on the surface, but that is because he anticipates and plays a human in order to fit into society. He isn't human, he is a broken doll.

Anyways, going back to the route discussion. Like I said, the three routes show three different views on Shirou's character and FSN as a whole - all three routes - show you the growth of his character in a way.

Fate Shirou is a broken doll, but he doesn't even realize it.

UBW Shirou is a broken doll, and he realizes it, but still wants to stay like that because of his beliefs.

HF Shirou is, however, slowly regaining his humanity. He is still a broken-doll, but starts being more and more human towards the end.

The same applies for his ideals.

Fate is the set up of his ideals. It sets them up as a wish to save everyone, and doesn't epxand upon them. It makes them seem as something noble.

UBW is the deconstruction of his ideals. It shows you that Shirou is not the person you think he is. It shows you and expands upon just how distorted Shirou and his ideal of wanting to save everyone are.

As for HF;

HF is, however, the betrayal of his ideals. Shirou betrays the ideals he has held within himself ever since the day Kiritsugu rescued him. He comes to a realization that there are more important things than his own ideals and that he is just a human. Thins that forced him to become 'human' again. That he cannot throw away everything else for the sake of those ideals.

That is why HF Shirou slowly begins regaining his humanity.

As for FSN as a whole showing the growth of his character, here is a simple quote.

I'll end my rambling here. Sorry guys, I just love discussing his character. There is so much more I'd like to say about him, but that would literally take a huge ass essay that would be written over more than a couple of pages. He's really the character most of us VN readers adore and is the most discussed character, undoubtedly.

Anime can't really show this because they didn't include a scene in the first ep (will be included in the BD tho'), Shirou's thoughts on certain fights aren't added (Rider vs Shirou, Archer vs Caster, etc.) and well, over-all because they cut out his inner monologues (they do make Shirou say some of his inner monologue sentences out loud tho', but it's not detailed or anything). Hopefully, the BDs fix all this. And the biggest problem is that they didn't adapt the Fate route before UBW or HF. Because it goes Fate > UBW > HF.


@Mahe. I might reply later. Kind of a lazy ass. Just a question, is this decomposition of his capable of decomposing stuff like lightning? More so, how much time does it take to activate it again after he casts it the first time? Because he can pretty much get rocked by the other swords while he decomposes the first 36 ones.

More so, if Gil were to use a 50-100 swords, it would be a best case scenario for Tatsuya, but if he angers Gil... Well, he'll fire off at least a few hundred, if not a thousand of swords at once.

 

Yeah its said that his decomposition can decompose light itself, so I don't think that would be a issue. It takes less than .05sec to activate it, the exact time I do not know.

Well that's why I also mentioned his area effect decomposition, if the swords numbers are to much for him to handle, he can just resort to that to protect himself. He hasn't used it in battle yet in the story, but from what I know, it will create a area of decomposition around him that will decompose anything that enters its radius.

 

Hmm, why does he need to stay away from his own Material Burst if that's the case? I mean, if he can decompose Gil's NP nukes that are made out of mana, why is he uncapable of decomposing his own MB?

This composition thing is a magic attack/defense, so it should be rendered useless by Gae Dearg since it spear eliminates things such as mana or magic, forcing the enemy to fight against it in physical means.

And, actually, nevermind what I said about Enkidu. It can't be decomposed. To begin with, it's an anti-divine NP which's information should be beyond understanding of human magic like Tatsuya's. Even if he can understand it's information, his decomposition can't affect it since it nullifies magic to the point where it could even nullify something like a Command Spell.

In other words, decomposition would be rendered useless against both Enkidu and Gae Dearg. He may be able to keep himself from getting struck by Gae Dearg, but escaping being caught by Enkidu is impossible even if you were a Servant who's speed far surpass human capability.

 

Well his material burst has literally no counter Lol, basically anything caught in it gets vaporized. Tatsuya can decompose the nukes before they go off. I mean this a multiverse battle, so we are counting both magic in both verses as the same right?

How long does it take to summon these NP's? It sounds like to me this battle is turning out to be who can one shot the other faster.

 

Well, from what I've gotten so far, this decomposition magic is only what proves to be a trouble for Gil, given that he has like multiple way to simply nullify or repel MB. I've also read that this decomposition magic works in an offensive way, as in it gets shot forward? In which case, the mirror can repel it as well. Either way, it can't work on Gil himself because of the armor's and mirror's abilities while Gae Dearg and Enkidu nullify it as well.

Elemental Sight is an useful ability to track down weapons he has to decompose (well, the ones he can), but can it keep track of light speed?

And it takes less than a second or so for them to appear. Some characters consider the appearance of the weapons instantenous, in fact.

 

He can make it shoot as projectiles, but he doesn't do this often unless he's trying to hide this ability.

The reason I don't think Gil's armor or mirror would work is because Tatsuya's decomposition directly effects the target, it doesn't travel to the target it directly effects it. So even if the two objects can nullify his magic, it won't do any good since he can pretty my bypass both and just affect Gils body.

Yes, Tatsuya faced a opponent before that had a weapon that could fire a plasma beam instantaneously and the beam moved at the speed of light and he could still track it with Elmental sight.

 

Don't get AC talking about Shirou....unless you want an essay
