But One Piece still needed to overturn the DB advantage while maintaining a positive advantage to beat it.

Dragon Ball is hyped even to this day to some people so you can expect it was still selling even when it finished. One Piece was constantly breaking records. And that was at time where Dragon Ball haven't had any rival compared to One Piece which had Bleach and Naruto so people had options then.

In everyway possible One Piece destroyed DB.

you are whining on one hand that one piece is long manga and still has quality and then defending the quality based on sales lmfao[/QUOTE]
your first reply makes no sense since you can't tell me One Piece isn't selling in pirate like DB did lol

but if it was garbage poeple wouldn't be reading it right? yet it's still the best sold manga every year lol
"One Piece has been the best-selling manga series every year since 2008 when the company began its manga chart" that's bloody 11 years in a row if this is correct. So you tell me every year people buy same manga which gives garbage chapters? Please mate...

Yeah it now has more volumes 'cause it's longer but how long did it take to overturn the DB advantage? Idk exactly when OP became the best sold manga of all times exactly since I can't find it. OP might have became the best selling manga on volume 52 or something (dunno)

"you are whining on one hand that one piece is long manga and still has quality and then defending the quality based on sales lmfao"

but how da fuk is it the best sold manga every year then if it's so called "garbage" ? you make no sense. If it was garbage, people would normaly and logicaly read something else? Is that not true?

You are talking nonsese atm, yet you still read that "garbage" week and week out.

can be but compared to Dragon Ball nah

Dragon Ball was peak at the time when china was much closed market than it was today so to read something like Japanese manga) ie Evil Japanese that butchered millions of chinese in ww2) you would have needed pirated copies

and how does that trump the facts other mangas did sold just not as great but they did sold brilliantly

so nope One Piece did no wipe out Shonen competition let alone dragon ball

    then great

One piece 90 volumes 450 million copies sold
aka 5 million copies per volume

Dragon Ball 42 volumes 280 million copies sold
aka 6.66 million copies per volume
    No one said its garbage
i just said past 400 chapters have been garbage and they have been apart from Luffy vs Mingo and Katakuri

    Facts are.

One Piece is run for 22 years. It's the best selling manga of all time, best selling manga for consecutive years and it isn't stopping.

And we haven't even got to the juicy parts in the story. At this point it will get beyond Batman which is in the making since when? 1940? So OP doesn't even care about Japan rivalries, it went worldwide.

How da heck can something this so called garbage come close to Batman if it's not that good?

    Those are the facts
BUT THOSE ARE PIRATE MAN that means nothing, I can say the same that One Piece was pirate as well which it was since Shonen Jump even said.

Well I said volumes as an example.

But dude when DB was run what was his rival?

OP needed to fight DB while being rivaled by other succesful manga like Bleach, Naruto, HxH... If anything OP had it harder.

How is it even with 400+ chapters of garbage it still ends up best selling manga every year, it's not like other manga don't exist. Why is it One Piece? Why is it not AOT or some crap?

If One Piece wasn't that good it wouldn't evet become this big is that not right?

Why is it not Detective Conan which is even longer that One Piece?

yes but you don't have the number which even was there would be pretty low since its now available in china easily
Dragon Ball has a number and thats over 100 million which is huge

Slam Dunk and Yu Yu Hakusho

basically the were the first big 3
    Lol what
OP came at a time when lifestyle of japs improved from times of dragon ball meaning they can afford more mangas
    Becoz it has more fans
yo there was one Newton while millions of moron who believed witches exists

One piece has a well established fanbase and they buy the manga

Bleach at its lowest still sold 500k a volume and was still among highest selling mangas of each year

  8. It was selling stuff that was already old news. Of course, it would sell less than brand new material. Pretty sure any of the big three managed to beat what DB was selling years after it ended.

DB had to literally set the stage for shonen as we know it. You know what was the norm at the time? Fist of the North Star. Compare that to what Toriyama made. You might say "oh well it was fresh so ofc everyone would flock to it" but it was different to the point that it could've just as easily flopped for not being what the genre was supposed to be at the time. It changed the manga landscape. One Piece on the other hand simply walked in its footsteps as did the rest of the big 3. This is beyond mere competition, it's about setting the norm for the genre itself. If anyone owns modern shonen, it's DB even long after it ended.

Now you're just being a fanboy. If nothing else OP is nowhere near as iconic as DB. Show people a picture of a dragon ball and they'll likely know what it is. Show them something from One Piece and chances are they won't know what they're looking at unless they're in the anime community. Even Naruto is more recognizable and well-received worldwide than OP which was evident from it consistently selling more in the west. The cultural impact of OP hasn't really been felt anywhere outside of Japan. Sales are but one small reflection of that.

  9. Let's not forget the fact that at the time of OP Japan had a lot higher birthrates and with their sharp decline it's literally impossible purely from a practical standpoint for any newer manga to get its numbers.

  10. And Kaguya arc was very well received by the japanese fans so that should tell you something. Only time when story quality will have an impact on a manga's status in Japan is when it's still early and hasn't quite got the following it needs to make it financially justified for Jump not to axe it.

  11. It also has to do with the Japanese audience being significantly younger than it is in the west. SJ is largely aimed at young boys who have their parents buy them the magazine each week. The whole genre is literally got its name from that.

I was playing the other day about age restrictions but it is funny how much the culture is different between Japan and the west when it comes to content available. I mean, would you have seen a manga like To Love-ru published openly in a magazine aimed at basically kids? Happened with SJ and it kept going for quite some time.
