I have no idea. Seems to me he was just toying with Starrk because his Zanpakuto wanted to. I think he can get serious only when Katen wants to. So it's not his fault. But when Katen does get serious, even someone like Starrk was an easy kill. Kyoraku could have apparently killed base Aizen (i.e. before he became transcended) if ******* Katen let him. Hell, Kubo himself stated that Kyoraku's bankai would have stomped base Aizen.

Shinji:
His bankai is broken. And it's a wide area of effect bankai like Kyoraku's (can cover a city sized area). It apparently can cause the inversion of perception of friend & foe, resulting in allies potentially slaughtering each other. Shinji himself is the only one who remains unaffected.

Understandable. He's popular in the FT fandom.

And how could you not like Gildarts? I know he's a blatant Shanks copy, but he was great and with very interesting powers.
