Synopsis

For 20 years, Beryl Gardenant has taught various people as the master of his father's sword-fighting dojo in a backwater village. Many have become astounding swordsmen themselves, but Beryl remains quite humble, referring to himself as an old man. His former disciples all disagree, including Allucia Citrus, a girl who graduated from Beryl's training over 10 years ago and is currently the commander of the Royal Order of Knights.

Wishing to reveal her cherished teacher's true greatness, Allucia recommends Beryl to her superiors, leading to his appointment as a special instructor for the Order by imperial command. She delivers the news herself—though Beryl has yet to realize her deeper motive. Pressured by his aging parents, Beryl reluctantly accepts the job and moves to the capital. There, he meets more of his past students, such as Surena Lysandra, now a black-rank adventurer, and Ficelle Harbeller, a prominent member of the Magic Corps. Before long, word begins to spread: not even the strongest warriors can match the "old man" from the countryside.

Episode 1 was great. Beryl is an older guy living with his parents out in a backwater village and is the master of his father's sword-fighting dojo. He doesn't think overly highly of himself, but everyone else does. His father is also constantly pestering him about getting a wife and giving a kid, so he can see his grandkid, although his mother isn't on the side of either really, or maybe is on both sides.

Once of his old students Allucia has become the commander of the Royal Order of Kights and also an instructor and came around after recommending Beryl as a special instructor to the order. It's an order from the king for the position, so he has little room to refuse. So, he's immediately sent off to the capital, and his father is thrilled telling him to find a wife while there. Beryl met another of his students that had also become a knight, Curuni.

Beryl came back after the first day, to find another of his old students at the house who was an adventurer but has retired, and he'll be taking over as master of the dojo. Not sure if it's a coincidence but it seems like it might have been orchestrated to get Beryl into the capital so he isn't "wasting" his talent in his village.

Beryl wondered around the capital with Allucia looking for appropriate accommodation and they ran into another one of Beryl's old students, Surena. She was happy to see him, at first she questioned Allicia for picking a random old man, until she realized who it was. Seems like Surena and Allucia don't get along, or just butt heads.

The vice commander of the knights, Henblitz Drout also questioned Allucia's pick, thinking she was just biased toward Beryl, so challenged him to a duel. He lost, and I expected him to be the almost mandatory douche character, but he actually turned around and was fine with things, actually flipping to being a big fan.

 

Episode 2 was good. Things are going well in the capital for Beryl, the knights are all taking well to his lessons and treat him with respect. Curuni offered to take Beryl around the city which he took up. That made Allucia a little jealous thinking of it as a date when she tried to locate him later. On the walk, they met with another old student Ficelle who is now the star of the Magic Corps.

Allucia was taught swordplay under Beryl to defend herself originally. The students in their dojo flourished under Beryl. At one point, they did an exercise with another dojo, and they won all of their matches. Allucia winning as a younger girl seemed to make the students in that school angry with her. When she went back to collect the hair ornament that she left behind accidentally, they cornered her and wanted to fight. Luckily, Beryl followed her back and then their mastered intervened before things got bad. She continued training at the school and before long Beryl had taught her everything he could, although she didn't want to leave and thought she still had much to learn she did. That's when she aced the entrance exam for the order and rose through the ranks to knight commander. After 10 years, she got enough influence to invite Beryl as an instructor.

Beryl went for an early morning walk then next day, and had a run-in with the classic loli archtype mage, Lucy Diamond. He keeps calling her little girl and thought she was a kid playing around, but apparently she's older than him and is the captain of the Magic Corps. She challenged him to a battle.
