Which is better?

Tokyo Ghoul. More entertaining story, better main character, more likeable cast in general, better symbolism, writting, etc.

Parasyte is bland. Just tries to represent itself in an intellectual way. Whole point of the protagonist is that humans can't kill due to emotions. Basically, just having a monster in his body and being forced to fight. <- I just described to you his whole mental state. Bland. They just try to cover it up with some attempts at ''smart'' quotes.

He gets development, except his development is kinda shit and he just swaps his way of functioning with the monster at one point. He is now more robotic while the monster is more human.

They just swap roles. That's not really well thought out. The plot itself is really repititive with the whole ''Parasytes starting to become more human, etc.'' shit. It also has some kind of an obvious enviromental message? No one is really likeable in the show... Maybe Kana who died literally a few episodes after she was introduced.

TL;DR; I dislike Parasyte and do not understand why people think it's good. Tokyo Ghoul has a more likeable and better written protagonist as well as the massive amounts of symbolism and less repititve story that are better than Parasyte.

Though, anime-wise... Parasyte is better. TG has a particulary bad adaption.

 

I wasn't really talking about her being a good character though. Likeability refers to how enjoyable the character is when on screen, personality-wise. Kana had a nice personality and she was enjoyable when on screen, I suppose. Don't think she's well characterized. Shinichi, I didn't like because his personality came down to his fear towards the situation he was placed in which didn't quite appeal to me. Migi was somewhat alright, I suppose.

That's kind of what I meant with the whole swapping of roles thing. They both basically just developed into the exact opposite of what they were in the beginning. Not particulary an interesting idea. And it's been done with a lot of other characters in this series which is kind of repititive as well. Their world-view, personality quirks, the way they go about acting upon things, etc. are all either non-existant or just very short by being related to the whole ''Humans can't think like machines because they have emotions'' message the show is trying to convey.

Swapping roles is an old trick, really. Not hard to pull off. Which is why I kinda consider the whole thing mediocre. Though, what matters is execution and the execution wasn't good for me. Because like I said, their whole world-views, problems, personality, way of acting upon things, philosophy, ideology, etc. was either

a) Just a reflection of their disgust for opposite role (in the beginning of the series) or a disgust for themselves for developing into said role (at the end of the series).
b) Just wasn't there or was really unexpanded upon.

I mean the whole thing with Shinichi's mother was kind of eh for me. I expected it to happen the moment she left the house for a trip. Predictability isn't a specifically bad thing. It's just that it was used as a device to change Shinichi's and Migi's roles and didn't really do much effect otherwise. Kind of wasn't a fan of that.

I didn't like her. She was just an emotional support for Shinichi. Not a character herself.

Oh, I'm not particulary saying it's bad. I've gave it a 6/10 in my MAL while most people gave it a 7-10/10. I mean, I kind of got into the series because people told me it's great and the best anime of it's season, but it kind of turned bland for me. Which is why I don't really like it.

 

Going by the animes for both, Parasyte was better IMO

 

Both are terrible and monster solo's
