Welcome to the discussion thread of Haro Asō's Alice in Borderland. We are doing 10 chapters per week starting from today (Friday/Saturday to Friday/Saturday). It has 87 chapters across 9 volumes. The official Japanese run was 2010 to 2016.

Synopsis:
Feeling unsettled about the future, high school student Ryouhei Arisu often escapes the reality of life. After hanging out at a bar, Arisu and his best friends, Daikichi Karube and Chouta Segawa, wait for the first train to arrive in the morning. Suddenly, a colorful array of fireworks set off in the sky, and an enormous blinding firework renders them unconscious.

The trio finds themselves back at the bar covered in dust, discovering that the city has become a barren wasteland. But instead of being worried, Arisu feels alive for the very first time in his life and relishes the freedom of this lifeless city. However, his bliss is cut short when the group rashly enters a festival venue. Seeing its delicacies and lively ambiance, they think the place is a dream; unbeknownst to them, it will be the setting for their first deadly game.

Together with his friends, Arisu slowly enters the mysterious area known as the Borderland—an unknown country where every game puts their lives at stake, and a single misstep can lead to their demise.

Chapter 1 was good. Gave a good introduction to the main characters. Arisu is a bit of a no hoper. He's going through school not really putting much effort in, and kind of just hating that aspect of life. He doesn't want to go to collage either and seems to just want to avoid responsability. At the same time, apparently he's thought about the future a lot. He just wants to get away from everything.

Chota, his friend, is a bit of a lecher, but doesn't seem like a bad person. He's pretty similar to Arisu in that he's kind of treating school as a joke.

We find both friends end up at a bar of another one of their friends, Karube. Karube looks a bit imposing and like a delinquent, but he's a great guy. He and Arisu were in the same class back in 6th grade, and he happened upon them getting beaten up by some thugs. Karube recognised Arisu and beat the shit out of the thugs, helping them out. He runs the bar after dropping out of school, and seems like the more mature one of the three, even after having dropped out during middle school. In the future, he wants to move to Australia and own a ranch. Karube is the good influence on Chota and Arisu, trying to guide them somewhat to get their shit together.

Arisu is the type of person that wants some devastating "world-ending" event, like a zombie apocalypse or a large earthquake, to completely up end his current life, he thinks he'd thrive there. Chota doesn't really care what "world" he's in, as long as there are hot women. Karube is the opposite and is content with his life. Karube gave a bit of a premonition that in some awful world like a zombie one, Arisu would be the one to survive.

Shit really hits the fan when they're watching fireworks, and a real blinding light comes out. This is where the group find themselves coming to in some desolate city, where it's been abandoned. It initially starts with Arisu and Chota enjoying themselves going around just trying to have fun. Karube is the grounded one and is very cautious, wanting them to take it seriously instead of goofing off under the pretence of it just being some dream.

After hearing some weird noise, they stumble onto what looks like a festival set up. They also finally find another person, a woman in the area who's only there due to the only toilet being in the "arena". They're pretty excited to find someone else, but she quickly realizes they're "first timers" and have no idea about what's going on. She warns them to not treat it like some dreamland, and that it's a dangerous place where they will die if they treat it that way. They've entered the "arena" for this "game".

 

I think if we just do 10 within 7 days that's fine.

Yeah all good. I mean you can read them sooner within that period. If it doesn't work out with 10 chapters done we can just extend/change the dates. It's just something to work with the start.

 

No need to spoiler tag stuff. If your posts start with the chapter number I just wont read it if it's one I am not up to. The point of 10 chapters within 7 days is it j ust gives more flexibility you could read 10 in 1 day or over 6.

 

If you don't it's all good lol. I did watch the anime OVA so I probably have some vague idea for a while.
