    Hello everyone!

I'm Jake, new person to the community here and hoping to stick around and become a regular face. I've been looking for a new community participate in that isn't already massive or too established. I'm hoping this place can be that community and I can help it grow!

    A few hobbies;
I write fiction and have self-published a novel on Amazon, hoping to motivate myself to write a sequel or self-publish more in the future.
I play games on my custom built PC and my Xbox One X
I enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery and young adult
I'm a huge fan of music and am always open to discovering or being introduced to new bands

Thanks for the welcome. It did, though most of the work was more figuring out how to effectively use the program to convert the word document into an .epub file that Amazon would recognize for their self-publication process. I usually play first person shooters, role play, real-time strategy, grand strategy and some action/adventure types.

Thanks for the welcome and yes sir, he's my favorite character.

    Thanks! I self-published a young adult novel I wrote.

Welcome to SD! Writing a novel is an incredible achievement! Do you have any science fiction recommendations? :)

Yeah, a bit. Ended up running into a problem where the printed version is too large, the size of regular printing paper, 8x11 instead of the usual 4x6 you find most softback books published in.

    Thanks for the welcome!

Thank you! Depends on what sort of science fiction you'd like?

Things I assume you'd never think of when writing.

Stuff I didn't think I'd need to know. I was hoping to find someone to do the formatting for me; but, those individual contractors offering those services wanted several hundred dollars to do it. The usual cost of a self-published novel is around $1,200.

Jesus. Tbh, I'm not sure if that price is expensive or not so much. Like, it's over 1k, but to have a proper book published it seems decent.

That's actually a low ball guess, a quick Google search gave me this:

The cost to publish a book depends on a) the length of the book and b) the level of quality you want. Most authors spend $2,000-$4,000 to self-publish their books — this includes editing, cover design, formatting, and marketing services.

Damn, that's actually a bit and more in line with what I was thinking.

Yeah, luckily programs like Calibre exist where you can do most of the formatting yourself and you can hopefully, find friends willing to do the peer-editing for free, saving you on some of the cost. I know the cover design is one of the few things you want to spend on because it can contribute to people buying your book.
