It's the same engine BlazeBlue and Guilty Gear use, its like the perfect combination of 2D and 3D animation. Plus they're really identical to the art from the manga and animation from the anime.
Thirty would be rather pathetic... There was a game released last year that, including minor playable characters like Tao, had a little over 1000. I'm sure they could get together at least 100.
The company who is behind DBFZ is known to not make a lot of characters. Instead, they focus on balance and try to make every character not OP. Which is why they prefer not to make many characters.
30 is a good number as long they choose the right ones. And so far so good.
Meh, I'd prefer we got around 100, with some unbalance between them. Say, Goku-Frieza level as having just overall stronger abilities than Gohan-Buu level characters, then Cell-Android tier, then the humans and everyone else in the last. Give the lower tiers something to make up for it though, like make Krillin unique being able to stun people with Solar Flare, give Tien a Tri-Beam that pushes you to the opposite side of the screen, Piccolo a passive regen, Gohan the ability to get stronger as he gets lower, etc, while making the top tiers basically just brawlers with different techniques.
