Just for giggles, you try the numerical combination of the books you just placed in order. Which is again, 580371 (OH WHOOPS I WAS A BIT LATE HERE)

In which case, I guess let's check and see if this key fits the Caretaker's door.

 

I grab a random book on my way out, planning to leave it by the Creeping Darkness as I walk by the stairs.

 

You grab one random book - Romeo and Juliet - and walk back towards the Gardens. As you walk through the reception area and into the corridor leading to the stairs, you hear footsteps again. As you peek around the corner, you see a a figure disappear down the corridor that your room is in.

Confused why the door disappeared I looked around . Not sure if anything but tried to see if there is a secret passage

 

(Whew, didn't see this edit until now.)

You decide to forget about following The Caretaker. It was useless gong to check - you had already examined the passageway before, and there was no way that it would have changed. It was a very likely possibility that going down there would lead to your death. Instead, you walked down the corridors into the dorms, and took the stairs out into the garden. As you climbed the steps upward to The Caretaker's Dwelling, the threw the book underneath the stairs for The Creeping Darkness. It grunted back at you thankfully. You think.

After taking a moment to check that the coast is clear, you try the Yale Lock Key in the door of the cabin. The door unlocks with a heavy click.

I step in with full confidence, assuming the figure from before was the Caretaker, immediately trying to find a way to lock the door behind me.

 

As soon as you're in, you hold Umbra behind you with one hand - and quickly turn on your heel. You close the door in haste, and lock it behind you using the key.

Behind you, you can hear the source of the music. It had been playing on repeat the entire time you were awake.

You turn back towards the inside of the room.

It really was a strange thing. most of the things in here were made out of wood - wooden flooring, wooden tables, chairs, dressers... even the bed frame was solid oak. You admired such grandiose luxury, and wondered what exactly The Caretaker in Ashgate to make so much money. As you advanced further into the room, you found an old Phonograph sitting on a small table, along with a small locked wooden chest.

The crank does nothing. Considering the fact that is had been playing the entire time you were awake, the crank was probably non-functional.
