I take out the mystery Keyes since it was worth a shot to try and unlock it

The only thing that was inside, was a large antique mirror.

I looked in the mirror curious of what I looked like I haven't seen my face in so long

 

You pick up the mirror, despite feeling so apprehensive. Looking back at you was a handsome, middle aged man with unruly hair and beard speckled black and white. It was a weird thing - you didn't remember your face until now, but you were very, very certain this was your own face. There was no question about it. You let your gaze wonder to the girl behind you - Umbra smiled and waved at your reflection in the mirror - it was nice to finally see her face and not be horrifically killed for it. As your vision flits back to your own face, something grabs your attention.

Your name badge.

These were your clothes, weren't they? They had to be. They were a perfect fit.

"Hey.... Umbles... you said you can't read... right?"

Umbra giggled in response, "Yeah silly. I never got the chance to learn."

You gulped and looked back at your reflection in the mirror. Seconds before the mirror cracked you reconfirmed the words "The Caretaker" printed in bold along your name tag. Umbra let out a whimper of disappointment. "Well, at least we got to see each other. I feel sorry for inadvertently breaking such a pretty mirror, though."

You couldn't tell her. You can't tell her. The best thing to do right now, was to sleep.

Yes, let's rest. It's been a rather exhausting day.

 

Today had been confusing the say the least. Pulling Umbra with you - you turned off the lights and fell into bed. Once she was settled and asleep - you opted to instead go and sleep on the couch. You fell into a deep sleep.

You have died.

As you open your eyes, you realise that something is not quite right. You seem to be inside what you thought was a dream - the last time you died. You wondered what happened. You took a look around you - everything looked discoloured, fragmented and distorted in some way. This... Otherworld was weird. You seemed to be back inside the room from before - but instead of the door being on the right side of the room, there was one leading off to the left. It was open.

What will you do now? You won't return to the living world for some time. Will you go and explore?

As you walk out in the corridor, you notice something to your right. You could see through the wall - out into the corridor, as if you were behind a one-way mirror. On the other side everything looked normal. From that side of the wall, you could hear some shuffling.

Sure, let's keep watching! What could possibly go wrong?

 

From the dorm corridor - a figure you were familiar with entered into view. "Ohya ohya~" it said, its voice high pitched and snivelling. "This looks like The Caretaker's handy work, does it not?" it finished, admiring the butterfly shaped splatter on the wall. This was the Unknown that was following you and Umbra around...? The.. Tan... tan... Tantarian?

Your head throbbed. Slowly, you were remembering little bits of information about this place. You used to work here. The Tantarian was an Unknown that you had captured and brought back to Ashgate to imprison. But then.. why... did you kill a human? As the thought washed over you, flashes of the event came to you. You remembered fighting a human. You wanted to pin him delicately into the wall and keep him there - just like a butterfly. You dismissed the thought from your mind quickly.

As if made from smoke - The Tantarian disappeared. That's right.. that was what this power did. You were seeing Shadows of what once was. That was the purpose of The Otherworld. You exhaled loudly. There wasn't anything to see here any longer.
