Ashgate #2 - Unknown Awakening.

You're really not in the mood to be around Umbra right now. Instead, you take a good look around your study.

It was clear that whatever you were getting paid - it was a heck of a lot. You found it a little annoying that while you couldn't remember anything of use about yourself - recalling details about the current state of the world was pretty easy. Wood was expensive. So much so, that only insanely rich people would have this amount of it in their home. The books too - you figured that the library inside the main part of the cube was also your doing. No-one read paper books like that any more. Not for over a hundred years.

You leaned backwards in your chair. The entire room stretched out before you. On the far wall - was the locked door you entered from - and on the left were shelves with various trinket and books. On your right, most of the wall was taken up by a large monitor - with a log in screen displayed. There was also a door - but upon further inspection, it looked like you needed a key card to open it. The shattered photo frame lay in pieces on the floor.

I check the shelf to see what the trinkets were, to see if anything could job my memory.

 

You get up out of you chair and walk over to the shelves on the left wall. On one shelf there was a pair of glasses - you tried them out, but it was apparent your eyesight was near perfect. They most likely used to be yours, so you wondered if that had anything to do with becoming an Unknown. On another shelf was a set of first edition Shakespeare books - collectors items. Next to them was a little note about the library puzzle, scribbled in blood. You scoffed. Had yesterday just been some scenario that your human self had created?

On the far end, were some more photos. More pictures of you with people you didn't even recognise. It made you irrationally angry. One by one - you slung each frame over your shoulder, taking solace in the rhythmic smashing of glass. As you went to throw the last one - something grabbed your attention.

I look at the picture and where it used to sit.

 

There wasn't anything especially special about where the photo used to sit. You inspected the photo once more. As your hold onto the frame with both hands, you feel your fingers brush up against a bit of paper.

I look around and check on the paper, and try to remove it if possible.

 

You turn the frame around and look at the backside. You could see the paper peeking out from underneath the backing. You removed the back - and the paper fell out. On the back of the photo, there was another blood-written message.

'Find your PD.'

I might as well ask Umbra what "PD" might mean i think.

 

You unlock the door to the study and take a peek outside. Umbra was out of sight. You call to her.

"Umbra... do you know what a PD is?"

"Ah!" she replied - you could hear her bouncing on the bed. "That's what the white-coats call a Personal Device. I don't really know what they used it for, though."

You thanked her, and locked yourself back inside your study.

I decide to search the study again - specifically searching for what may be a small device making sure to push my fingers into any little nooks

 

You examined the shelving thoroughly. There didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. You also recall that you didn't see anything out of the ordinary in any of your desk drawers, but it's not like you explicitly searched for a secret compartment...

You hear glass crunching underneath your feet as you cross the room to search the other side. Nothing.

What will you do now?

I decide to look into the draws feeling for any compartments, false spaces or whatever may be.

 

As you remove some of the files and paper from one draw, you hear the bottom of it rattle. Bingo. You pushed down on it, and lifted the fake bottom from out of the draw. In there, lay a solitary piece of paper.

• Crowd Control
• Extermination
• Protection
• Communication.

You frowned. What did it mean? It also didn't exactly help much in the way of finding your PD.

I take a closer look at the screen, the one with the log in

 

You approach the screen and hesitantly touch it with your fingers. It responded, bringing up a keyboard touch pad interface. You decided to type in random words, but nothing worked. Eventually, the screen offered to give you a hint - which you responded to with haste.

"Your real name."

Well, that's just fantastic.
