I've let my initial reactions to Belle settle down a bit and I've come to appreciate the film a bit more. It's visuals are fantastic (despite being cg half the time..) and the soundtrack was also really good which for a movie like this is the two top priorities. Most of my problems were with the story and it making little sense some of the time (what even was the purpose of two separate romance plots when none of them ever went anywhere and why touch on a difficult subject like child abuse if you're going to provide a cop-out answer to it?)

Still, there is enough that the story does well for it to at least even out the bad (for example mc's overcoming of trauma and small character moments like Kamishins confession). I'd say it's a decent movie with a great artistic achievements and a story that works half the time and other times it doesn't. The times it does work however are really satisfying.

Honestly cg just lacks the human touch to it. I get it's still worked on by artists who love what they do and especially for anime movies which do a lot more touching up of the 3D models for individual frames (much like drawing every frame in 2D) rather than just making them once and reusing them constantly like the west does but it still isn't the same for me as it all feels too plasticky and movement feels stiff and yet too smooth at the same time. It lacks the crazy expressionism of 2D which can freely manipulate the character's shape whereas 3D is mostly stuck to a clearly defined model.

It gets better when we're talking DB FighterZ or Superhero cg where the 3D artists are doing their hardest to make 3D look like 2D but if you're doing that why not just use 2D? I mean I know why, 3D is faster and therefore more profitable but even a top tier CG like Superhero doesn't capture the 2D magic of likes of Broly (I'm purposefully staying in the DB realm to make differences easier to see).

 

Due to the time constraints and low budget most anime series will look bad or underwhelming a lot of times regardless of it being 2D or 3D however 2D will still look better even when cheap because cheap 2D animation can be made up for with tricks that 3D doesn't have especially in anime where 3D looks good only when it's trying to look like 2D and that we've only seen done in movies because they have significant budget and time frame to work with which isn't available for a weekly series which typically has like a month to produce an episode afaik.
