    You can start with the Ghost in the Shell 1995 film and its 2004 sequel Innocence.

    But I personally recommend watching the two seasons of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (GITS: SAC for short) Continuity, which is highly regarded (and a favourite of mine in the franchise). SAC (1st Season) and SAC 2nd Gig (2nd Season) followed by the movie Solid State Society (takes place two years after 2nd Gig).

    Also, even though these aired from 2002 to 2006, they look better than most anime today. Heck, they look as good as many big anime movies from today.

    GITS Arise is a separate continuity altogether that is more in line with the manga.

    GITS: SAC_2045 is set in the SAC continuity and is a proper sequel to the SAC series and movie, and it is in full 3D instead of 2D. However, opinions are torn on it, with some people either despising it or loving it, with nothing in-between.

    Also... the SAC series stands out for a lot of the vocals in the music being in Russian, courtesy of the late Origa (Wikipedia Link).

    By the way... This is the intro that JJK Season 3 opening references:



    The JJK intro specifically pays homage to the shots at 0:58 to 1:00 in the video above.

    Yeah I was thinking the series. The only bad thing about the standard definition digital era is the video quality can be a bit iffy and upscales usually look bad.

    Yeah I can kind of see it after looking it up.

    Help... I made six cheese baked pasta for lunch. I ate enough for two people (may be more). So full right now that I can't move.

    However! I have no regrets... :autisticcat

    Funny thing is that the GITS SAC series look best in 720p or may be 1080p. Heck, I watched it at 360p or 480p back when it was airing on TV and it still looked good.

    SAC_2045, however... The animation and art style shift compared to SAC 2nd Gig and SSS (Solid State Society) are just jarring.

    It would depend on a lot of different things. If it was an upscaled re-release it just depends how the upscaling was handled. I think the Bleach blu-ray release from aniplex japan was a fantastic one. Or, if it aired on TV that can sometimes have a 720p release that looks better than dvd, and less worse than a botched upscale.

    But yeah, having a look, the bluray seems fine. Very much depends on the show though.

    By the way... I highly recommend the English dub for the Stand Alone Complex continuity. Then again, both the Japanese and English dubs are great.
