    Yeah. Mashima just gave up at that point. He gave up on everyone who wasn't a main character and on his own lore. He flat out admitted in one interview (which was printed on the back of one of the last volumes) that he was making stuff up in the last arc as he went along (which was evident from the downhill trend in the second half of the last arc). Everything before was at least planned out.
